Mortar Board, as an honor society, shall be an association of individuals selected for distinguished ability and achievement in scholarship, leadership and service.
Mortar Board is a selective senior honor society, not an exclusive organization. Membership will be offered to all students who possess superior scholastic ability, outstanding and continual leadership, and dedicated service to the community.
New members are selected by the existing chapter once a year. The application process opens at the beginning of each winter quarter and new members are initiated into Mortar Board during the spring quarter.
Selections are as unbiased as possible and based solely on candidates’ accomplishments (not potential) in the areas of scholarship, leadership and service. Candidates are recruited from a variety of backgrounds, majors and experience. No student shall be discriminated against on the base of race, ethnic origin, creed, age, sex, affiliation, marital status, sexual orientation or physical challenge, or any other affiliation or protected class (Bylaws, Article III, Section 1.8.).
The selection process is highly competitive. Applicants are encouraged to submit a thorough application that illustrates your qualifications, character, and commitment to Mortar Board’s ideals of scholarship, leadership, and service. A completed application includes responses to four prompts, a personal statement, a copy of your Degree Progress Report, and one letter of recommendation.

**REGARDING THE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION PORTION OF YOUR APPLICATION: If possible, please submit a hard copy of the letter of recommendation in the manila folder with the rest of your application. However, if the recommender wishes, letters of recommendations may be sent via mail to Mortar Board to the following address, and must be postmarked by the application deadline for the applicant to qualify for a primary interview:

- Enrollment as an undergraduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles.
- Maintenance of a cumulative GPA in the top 35th percentile.
- Completion of at least 90 units by the end of the summer quarter of the application year.
- Intended date for graduation shall be no sooner than one (1) quarter following initiation.
- Distinguished ability and achievement in scholarship, leadership, and service.
- A commitment to the mission, goals, and purposes of Mortar Board.
- Submission of an application before the deadline.
